Practical guide

Choose an agency by the work you can inspect.

A convincing proposal is a starting point. Before you sign, understand what the agency will build, what it will do each month, what you can see for yourself and what happens when the engagement ends.

  1. Start with your own brief.
  2. Ask for the deliverables in units you understand.
  3. Read the evidence with its definition.
  4. Know what access means.
  5. Read the guarantee and the exit together.
  6. Leave the call with a decision you can explain.

01 Start with your own brief.

Write down the services you want more inquiries for, where you can deliver them and who usually buys them. Include the work you do not want. Then identify who in your team will answer inquiries and how much capacity you have.

That gives you something concrete to discuss. Without it, a proposal can sound sensible while solving the wrong problem.

02 Ask for the deliverables in units you understand.

How many website pages are in the build? What new work happens each month? Are listings placed once or maintained? Is advertising management included, and who pays for the ads?

If outreach is included, ask what one email allowance counts and whether sending costs are separate. If an agency offers several plans, identify what actually changes between them.

03 Read the evidence with its definition.

An ad platform's lead count is not necessarily a count of unique people in the CRM. A booked visit is not necessarily a completed visit. A proposal value is not collected revenue.

Ask for dates, sources and definitions. A useful example explains both what happened and what the record cannot establish. It does not need to imply that every client will see the same result.

Google Ads, Campaigns table, July 1 to August 31, 2026: 76 conversions at $52.64 each, as the account counts them. A conversion is Google Ads' name for a counted lead. Cropped to those columns; account, campaign and budget details are obscured. Open the redacted report.

04 Know what access means.

Ask whether you can open the reporting accounts and CRM during the engagement. Separately, ask who owns the accounts and what you can take with you after cancellation. Access today does not by itself tell you what a handover includes.

05 Read the guarantee and the exit together.

If there is a guarantee, ask what qualifies, when its clock starts, what you must do and exactly what the remedy is. A headline about working free is incomplete without that definition.

For cancellation, ask about notice, hosting, CRM access, data export and the tracked phone number. A backup may be a set of files, not a website and automations that keep working on another platform.

06 Leave the call with a decision you can explain.

You should be able to describe the scope, fee, separate costs, responsibilities and exit in ordinary language. If a term is still open, have it resolved in the agreement before you rely on it.

At Legacy, the website build and ongoing management are included in three monthly plans. The comparison shows the quantities; the guarantee terms and cancellation terms are on our Terms of Service page.
